The “Good Creation” – Mimicry, Design, and the Young Earth Creationists Dilemma

gecko-leaf-mimick-design-creation

Can you find the gecko in the picture to the right?  Yeah, it is that brown leaf-like things toward the top of the image.    I saw this image being used as the profile image for the facebook page “we  CAN and we WILL find 1,000,000 Creationists.”     The suggestion of course is that such an amazing […]

State of the Origins Debate – Part III: Recent Genesis Books

Welcome-to-a-Reformed-Church-Hyde-Daniel

One way of looking at the origins debate is by looking at the publishing scene.   I have observed elsewhere that the last 20 years have seen more books published on the topic than the prior 100 years combined.    The creation science movement has pumped out an astounding number of books and seminary professors […]

State of the Origins Debate – Part II: The Response to Walton’s “Lost World”

Cosmos-through-trees

Returning to John Walton and his recent contributions to the Genesis debate:    Previously I mentioned that I had picked up Walton’s book “The Lost World of Genesis One” again.  I also have read his more recent book which is a more academic follow-up to that book entitled “Genesis 1 as Ancient Cosmology.”   There have […]

An Ancient and Alien Forest Reconstructed: A challenge for young earth creationism

Reconstruction of a 300 million year old permian forest found in China. None of the plants in this forest exist today though some fern-like trees have similarities to modern day tree ferns.

Recent studies (see references below) of multiple intact fossilized forests provide a very detailed account of the presence of an seemingly alien forest that was found multiple locations across the entire globe at some point in the past.  A forest completely devoid of the presence of any flowering plants such as oaks, maples and beech […]

On the Fringes of the YEC Movement: The Creation Ministry of Philip Stott

Vital-questions-Philip-Stott

All movements have extremist and young earth creationism also has its own extremists that work on the fringes of the movement. In 1997 I had an experience that strongly effected my view of the age of the earth debate within evangelical Christianity and the reformed church in particular.

The Current State of Creationism in the Reformed Church – Part I

young_earther_i_support_ken_ham_tshirt

After a mental break on the issues revolving around reading Genesis 1-11 for about year the topic moved back to the front of my mind again about six months ago as I prepared to get back to a couple of larger writing projects that will focus on the age of the earth.   As a way […]

Forests During the Age of the Dinosaurs – A Cretaceous Reconstruction

Araucaria_confirsSA

Continuing on with the theme of the last several posts which examined reconstructions of fossil forests here are the results of another research paper released this past week (reference below).  In this study the authors examined records of more than 2200 fossilized wood collections just from Cretaceous aged rocks at locations all around the world.  […]

The Lost World Of New York: Another Ancient Forest Reconstruction

March 1 cover of Nature magazine. The image is an artistic reconstruction of what a 390 million year old forest preserved in a New York quarry would have looked like.

A quick note about another report of a fossilized forest that has been described. Last week it was PNAS that had the big story of a the “Permian Pompeii,” a fossil forest reconstructed in China which I discussed in “An Ancient and Alien Forest Reconstructed.” Not more than a week later the magazine “Nature” is highlighting the description of a another reconstructed forest.
