The Proud Scientific Ignorance of Doug Wilson: An Exploration of Science Denial

The author of the YouTube channel “Gutsick Gibbon,” has produced a detailed analysis of Doug Wilson’s scientific illiteracy in her latest video “The Proud Scientific Ignorance of a Christian Nationalist.” As a biologist myself, I was particularly impressed by her systematic dismantling of Wilson’s misconceptions about basic evolutionary theory and geology.

The video meticulously documents Wilson’s profound misunderstandings of fundamental scientific concepts while highlighting his remarkable confidence—to put it as kindly as I can—in promoting these misunderstandings. Some of Wilson’s most egregious errors include his complete mischaracterization of how evolutionary processes work. For instance, he presents the “mousetrap argument” for irreducible complexity while failing to understand that evolutionary features don’t evolve with a predetermined purpose – a basic tenet of evolutionary theory that any first-year biology student would know.

Perhaps most telling is Wilson’s confused treatment of eye origins, which the video points out is possibly the worst example he could have chosen. As she explains, the diversity and development of eyes is famously well-documented, with existing organisms demonstrating every stage of eye development, from simple light-sensitive cells to complex camera-type eyes. Wilson’s brother even tries to correct him on this point during their recorded conversation, showing just how out of his depth Wilson is on these topics.

The video also highlights Wilson’s complete misunderstanding of the human-chimp genetic differences and Haldane’s Dilemma. As the video demonstrates through careful analysis of the scientific literature, Wilson’s claims about the number of genetic differences that would need to be fixed in populations are off by several orders of magnitude – he suggests millions of changes when the actual number of beneficial mutations that needed to be fixed is closer to a few thousand.

Geological principles also escape Wilson. Of course he has taken in quite a bit of creationist material without much critical thought. But what makes this analysis particularly valuable is how it connects Wilson’s scientific ignorance to his broader political agenda. As a Christian nationalist who wants his interpretation of Genesis enshrined in national policy, Wilson’s proud rejection, or willful cherry picking of data and sources, of scientific evidence has implications beyond mere academic interest. His growing influence through alliances with organizations like Answers in Genesis and his connections to political figures makes his scientific illiteracy a matter of public concern and contributing to the spread of misinformation in the church.

The video provides an essential resource for understanding how scientific evidence is often mishandled by influential figures in the creation science movement. Gutsick Gibbon’s background in biological anthropology and her many years of experience engaging with creationist arguments makes her uniquely qualified to assess Wilson’s claims, and her analysis reveals the dangerous combination of scientific ignorance and unwarranted confidence that characterizes much of Wilson’s work.

I encourage anyone interested in science education, the creation-evolution debate, or the broader implications of scientific literacy in public discourse to watch this comprehensive analysis. The video not only exposes the problems with Wilson’s understanding of science but also provides valuable insights into why scientific literacy matters for our broader society. It’s a valuable contribution to our understanding of how scientific evidence is misused in public discourse.

  1. Dr. Duff, I am an OEC in a YEC world and I appreciate all your work on the topic. There are too few Christian scientists who consistently interact with the false scientific-sounding teaching of the YEC world. It is an entirely frustrating exercise to observe highly intelligent individuals accept, without hesitation, ideas because they think they are somehow fighting the “lies of the devil” regarding science.   I also appreciated last weeks email on Doug Wilson’s political movement. It is sad to see so many Christians who have sacrificed much for a promise of political power and influence. History is pretty clear that it never ends well for us when we do. I wish you all the best and pray that God works in the hearts of those who read your material. I also pray that you are encouraged in the face of what must be brutal pressure at times. I know God can and is guarding your heart and mind. Tim
